The Chronicle of Ken Muir
Borg is the estate of Sir Hugh de Morville of Borg, a Norman knight in the service of Uchtred mac Fergusa.
It lies to the west of Kirkcudbright on good farm land and sheep-rearing territory. Hugh has constructed a good sized motte-and-bailey castle at Boreland of Borg (the term ‘Boreland’ comes from ‘Board Land’ and refers to that portion of an estate which services the lord himself, rather than be rented out to the villeins and cotters).
This map shows the location of the Boreland of Borg motte in relation to its surrounds. The toun of Kirkcudbright lies about 2 miles to the east, the vill and church of Borg the same distance to the south. The estate of Twignam (now called Twynholm) lies just to the north.
